UBS has hired a private banker from rival Credit Suisse, who is known for co-launching one of the UK's first gay private banking services during his time at the Swiss bank. Toby FitzGerald joined the Zurich-based lender last month as an associate director. He reports to Shona Baijal, an executive director in the UBS wealth management division. He will be focusing on growing the bank's entrepreneurial and corporate executive business. He joined from Credit Suisse, where he had worked as a relationship manager for the last four years. Before that, he worked in the mergers and acquisitions division at US investment bank Jefferies for about three years. At Credit Suisse, with former colleague Stephen Connolly, FitzGerald spearheaded the first bespoke private banking service provided by gay advisors at a major bank. At the time the Swiss bank announced that the new service would cover all the traditional aspects of private banking alongside tailored services for same-sex couples covering areas like civil partnership and adoption. FitzGerald will not be focusing exclusively on gay clients at UBS although the option is still available if required. He said: “I am delighted to be joining Switzerland's largest bank at a time when it is moving from strength to strength."
