CA school offers course in planning for HNW clients

"Advanced" FP strategies for high-net-worth contributes to CFP designation. The University of California Irvine's continuing-education extension is launching an online course -- "Advanced Financial Planning Strategies for High-Net-Worth Clients" -- to help students qualify for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. It's offered as part of the school's Personal Financial Planning certificate program, which is certified by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

"High-net-worth clients have an array of unique needs [that] financial planners must understand and be comfortable with in order to succeed," says Lori Munoz-Reiland, director of business for UC Irvine's part-time program. "This class prepares students to excel in satisfying the specific demands of this type of client."

The new online course in financial-planning for high-net-worth clients starts on 30 June and ends on 12 September. It's meant to give students a practical understanding of the latest high-net-worth planning devices, techniques and strategies with an emphasis on domestic- and offshore-asset protection strategies and application to California income, estate and gift tax planning. Students will also be equipped with a variety of financial planning strategies and techniques designed to assist in the development of a formal client solution presentation incorporating advanced financial, tax, and estate planning topics.

Course instructor Richard Watson III, managing partner of Torres & Watson, an Irvine, Calif.-based financial advisory practice affiliated with Ameriprise Financial, says that meeting the needs of high-net-worth clients calls for specialized financial-planning strategies. "Participants in this course will be armed with an assortment of guiding principles to help them better serve high-net-worth clients," he adds.

In addition to its financial-planning certificate program, UC Irvine's offers continuing education in investment management and investor relations. -FWR
