Florida estate-law firm bring in offshore tax and finance veteran Joel Karp. Tax and estate planning law firm Cantor & Webb has hired international tax attorney Joel Karp as Of Counsel in the firm's Miami office.

"I've known Joel for many years and have respected him as one of the few eminent experts in international tax and finance law, so we jumped at the opportunity to bring him on board our team," says Cantor & Webb managing partner Steven Cantor. "South Florida is a very unique legal market in that we have a substantial international finance market based right here in Miami."

The term "of counsel" has several meanings. Originally it referred to a retired or semi-retired partner who kept a hand in the firm. But it can also describe a lawyer from an outside firm who provides expertise in a particular area of the law.

Karp -- who will maintain his own firm, Miami-based Joel J. Karp -- falls into the second category of "of counsel" at Cantor & Webb.

Karp describes his tie-in with Cantor & Webb as "an excellent fit" because his practice "dovetails quite nicely with [Cantor & Webb's] core practice areas. My background in international banking and investment management will enable me to provide a level of specialized legal counsel to our clients that is not widely available in the South Florida legal marketplace."

Cantor & Webb has also added new associate Giev Askari, a graduate of the New York University School of Law's Taxation Program and a former law clerk to the Probate Court in Palm Beach County, Fla.
