The worldwide hedge fund industry now manages more than $1,500 billion across 8,000 funds, according to figures released by HedgeFund Intelligence at a Paris summit. The last time that HFI estimated this figure was in 2004, when it came out at $1,000 billion. Hedge funds managed in Europe account for over $300 billion of the total, up around 18 per cent over the past year. Of these, around two thirds are based in London. EuroHedge data showed that European funds returned an average of 8.8 per cent last year, compared with 5.8 per cent on average for hedge funds managed out of the US.
